There are a variety of carbon calculators available on the Internet that enable you to calculate the carbon component of your footprint, and that include tips on how to help slow climate change by lowering your own carbon production. Pick five action items from the list below, and practice them on a daily or as needed basis. If everyone were to change their behavior even slightly to be more climate friendly, this would collectively have a significant impact to slow climate change.
- Turn the lights off when you leave a room
- When your light bulbs burn out, replace them with energy efficient bulbs
- Adjust your thermostat when you can to save energy
- Run you dishwasher only when it is full to save energy
- Take short showers and/or install low volume shower heads
- Use recycled paper whenever you can, like in your printers
- Adjust your water heater to no higher than 120 degrees (F) and/or insulate it
- Weatherize your home windows to save energy
- Unplug unused electronics that are drawing energy
- Change your home heating/air conditioning and car air filters when recommended
- Keep your tires inflated to the right level to save gas
- Buy a hybrid or more fuel efficient car
- Carpool when you can to save gas
- Plant a tree to absorb carbon dioxide
- Replace landscape lighting with outdoor solar lighting
